Abstract: The article introduces the basic concepts and ideas of the sociocultural, or cultural-historical, perspective on learning, development and education. Originating in the ideas of Lev S. Vygotsky, research within the sociocultural perspective analyses how people learn by appropriating the cultural tools (intellectual and physical/technical) of their society. Such tools mediate our thinking as well as practical action. Learning takes place through social interaction where we come to share the insights and experiences of other people in our community. The article describes the development of this perspective in various fields of research, and its role in conceptualizing learning and development in complex societies.
