Title: Unique Rail: Many Words Have Been Used to Describe NJ Transit's River LINE Light Rail Transit (LRT) System
Abstract: This article describes the innovative new New Jersey Light Rail Transit (LRT) system known as the River LINE. Some of the points that set this system apart include a turnkey design-build-operate-maintain (DBOM) approach to streamline implementation of the community's needs, an operating design with streetcar-like operation in a mixed traffic scenario, and a dynamic system of advanced rail traffic control allowing River LINE to operate on the same rail as freight trains by using a temporal separation model. While the system is officially referred to as an LRT, it in fact operates more along the lines of classic interurban lines, such as the Pacific Electric line in Los Angeles, California and the North Shore in Chicago, Illinois. The article also describes some of the LRT operations, as well as the manner in which operators have negotiated the sharing of rail space with freight operators.
