Title: Microbial Fermentation Strategies for Biomass Conversion
Abstract: Fermentation platform for biomass biochemical conversion refers to the process of biomass conversion by microbial fermentation. After the pretreatment of lignocellulose, the subsequent process includes several typical biological steps: cellulase and hemicellulase production, enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose, hexose fermentation, and pentose fermentation. The integrated processes should shorten the production cycle and save capital costs, which is beneficial to the biomass conversion. Several processes, including separate hydrolysis and fermentation, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, simultaneous saccharification and cofermentation, consolidated bioprocessing, and mixed culture fermentation, are compared in this chapter. Ethanol fermentation from lignocellulose was taken as the example for discussions on the biomass biochemical conversion fermentation platform. The advantages and prospects of solid-state fermentation processes for bio-based products are also introduced.
