Nanocoatings, nanolaminates, and their composites offer the possibility of modifying the surface properties of surgical-grade materials to achieve improvements in in vivo reliability and performance as well as increased protection from the release of harmful or unnecessary metal ions through proper selection of coating materials. They can also be produced to deliver exceptional bioactivity and faster tissue-bonding properties due to their increased surface area and their nanocrystalline structure which are inter-related. This chapter aims to provide a brief review on the recent advances in calcium phosphate nanocoatings specifically on sol–gel-derived coating and their related nanocomposites as surface modification methods for dental and orthopaedic applications.
