Title: Portarlington Beach renourishment and seawall renewal projects
Abstract: The Portarlington coastline has been eroding for over 100 years and has been subjected to numerous interventions. These include a masonry seawall to protect the Portarlington coastal cliffs from retreat and collapse, the Portarlington harbour and offshore breakwater, as well as beach nourishment and sand bypassing of the harbour. DELWP initiated two projects to renew Portarlington Beach and the masonry seawall. A range of options to improve long term management of erosion were considered for both sites. After consultation with the stakeholders, the adopted erosion control approach was sand backpassing, The Portarlington coastal cliff is undergoing retreat and collapse which requires protection and management at this location were a historically significant seawall was being outflanked, affecting the cliff conditions. A control structure was selected and built to remediate to this hot spot erosion. Pro-active approach to coastal management prevented the loss of coastal amenities.
