Title: Aantekeningen bij 'ooit', deel 2: de opkomst van niet-polair 'ooit'
Abstract: Tijden van verandering zijn tijden van verwarring. Normen verschuiven, men weet niet meer wat goed en slecht is, en het resultaat is verwarring die eerst geleidelijk wegebt als de verandering zich heeft voltrokken en een nieuwe toestand van rust is ingetreden. We zien deze verwarring ook bij veranderingen in de taal. Een goed voorbeeld is de status van ooit. Seuren (1975) geeft ooit als een voorbeeld van een negatief-polaire uitdrukking in het Nederlands, maar Seuren (1976) noemt ooit een negatief-polaire uitdrukking. Van der Wouden (1988, 1994) daarentegen houdt vol dat ooit gelijktijdig zowel een negatief-polaire als een positief-polaire uitdrukking is (zoals Chomsky (1981) heeft betoogd dat PRO zowel pronominaal als anaforisch is), terwijl de Hoop (1988: 120) ontkent dat ooit gevoelig is voor polariteit. Voor al deze stellingen valt op het eerste gezicht wel iets te zeggen. De reden dat de zaak enigszins subtiel ligt is enerzijds dat de distributie van ooit vrij complex is, en anderzijds dat diezelfde distributie nogal scherpe veranderingen heeft ondergaan in de afgelopen decennia. Ik wil hier betogen dat ooit in de afgelopen decennia van een negatief-polaire uitdrukking zich ontwikkeld heeft tot een uitdrukking met zowel een negatief-polair als een niet-polair gebruik. Het moderne ooit is daarmee een geval van polysemie. Ik heb deze stelling reeds eerder gelanceerd in Hoeksema (1998a), maar ik wil hem thans uitgebreider en met meer aandacht voor de historische en regionale details aan de lezer voorleggen. Kijken we naar het gebruik van ooit in 19e-eeuwse en vroeg 20e-eeuwse teksten, dan ontkomt men niet aan de conclusie met een negatief-polair element van doen te hebben. Typerende contexten waarin dit woord zijn opwachting maakt zijn vragende zinnen, negatieve zinnen, conditionele bijzinnen, comparatiefzinnen, relatieve bijzinnen bij superlatieve en universele NPs, en dergelijke (zie Klima 1964, Seuren 1976, 1985, Fauconnier 1975, 1978, Ladusaw 1980, Linebarger 1980, 1987, Zwarts 1981, 1986a,b, Heim 1984, Hoeksema 1983, 1986a,b, Hoeksema en Klein 1995, Kurschner 1983, Progovac 1988, 1994, Krifka 1990 a,b, Kadmon en Landman 1990, 1993, Szabolcsi en Zwarts 1993, Van der Wouden 1994, 1997, Van der Wal 1996, Giannakidou 1998 en Israel 1998 voor een uitgebreider overzicht van de omgevingen waarin negatief-polaire uitdrukkingen zich ophouden).
