Title: A morphosyntactic analysis of the Japanese modal element -mai
Abstract: Based on observations of the behaviors of the Japanese modal element -mai and related contemporary and old modals, I argue that positing a syntactic structure that reflects the cartography of different functional heads and adverbials correctly captures their interesting properties. I also adopt a view that negative statements have their affirmative judgments as presupposition so as to account for distribution of nominative and topic markers. In addition, issues concerning historical and dialectal changes will be addressed.
