Abstract: This chapter describes the traditional spiritual practices of the Koreans: shamanism and animism. Shamanism is the belief that human beings can interact with any god or spirit—not just those found in animism, but also deceased ancestors or deified heroes from the past. Meanwhile, animism is based on the notion that inert objects such as mountains, trees, wind, and rain are inhabited by spirits that human beings can interact with. The two have been so closely intertwined and so prevalent on the Korean peninsula for so long that most observers would say they form the original religion of Korea.
