Title: The Effects of Toxicants on Olfaction in Fishes ☆
Abstract: One of the most important ways by which fish are integrated into their environment is through their sense of smell. Many of their complex and indispensable behaviors depend on sensing dissolved cues in a background rich in competing information. Human-introduced contaminants not only increase background noise, but also impair the ability of fish to respond to natural olfactory cues. The ways in which olfaction and its associated behaviors are impaired involve impairments ranging from the nasal receptors to the muscles. Much work remains to fully determine how contaminants mechanistically affect olfaction and cause population-level changes in the world's fish stocks.
