Title: Celebrity Politics in a Postmodern Era: The Case of Jesse Ventura
Abstract: AbstractAbstractCelebrities running for office raise unique issues for political ethics. The emergence of celebrity politics—"politainment"—is the product of postmodernism as well as the rise of entertainment and consumerism in modern society. This new form of politics presents unique ethical concerns that cannot adequately be addressed by current rules governing conflicts of interest. This commentary examines postmodernism in juxtaposition to modernity. It then describes the phenomenon of celebrity politics, using Jesse Ventura as a case study. The study explores the ethical implications of this form of politics and politicians. The conclusion examines how well contemporary political ethics addresses celebrity politics and discusses what postmodern political ethics might look like in the future.
