Title: Policy Trends in Teacher Professionalization and Professionalism in India
Abstract: This chapter presents an overview of trends in teacher professionalization and professionalism in India. A brief introduction clarifies the distinction between the terms professionalization and professionalism. This is followed by historical images of teachers, teaching, and teacher preparation as defined within the India’s socio-cultural context. The development of institutionalized teacher education in colonized and independent India, and the organization of the field of teacher preparation following independence from the British administration is discussed next. Recent policies specifically relevant to early childhood teacher preparation are highlighted. The chapter concludes with a discussion on tensions that are encountered in the process of increasing teacher professionalization, and how these challenges may be addressed.
