Title: 7.6 Assessment and Management of Anxiety in Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract: Anxiety is a highly prevalent co-occurring condition in youth with ASD and one of the most common concerns reported by parents regarding their child with ASD. Diagnosing anxiety in youth with ASD is complicated by symptom overlap between the two conditions, a shortage of validated anxiety instruments for this population, and the presence of language, cognitive, and socioemotional impairments. These measurement challenges can confound diagnosis, delay treatments, and sometimes result in inaccurate prescribing of medications. The objectives of this session are as follows: 1) to review recent literature on phenomenology, contributing factors, and pathophysiological models of anxiety in youth with ASD; and 2) to review treatment data and provide clinical guidelines to manage this condition in youth with ASD with and without intellectual disability.
