In the production, the mutation load which oil rig bears will increase the energy consumption of the power unit, even damage its bearings. Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) has an ability of infinite charging and discharging times and a high speed of charging and discharging, also has a strong ability of dealing with impact load. Based on the superiorities above, FESS assisted load peaking program is proposed, in which permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) works as the drive motor of the flywheel. In order to achieve the function of stabilizing the load fluctuation, the optimized control methods of FESS are designed and applied for oil rig, in which the flywheel stores the excess energy in light load and releases energy when it overloads. The theoretical analysis and system simulation verify that the designed program and control strategies, in which a FESS used in oil drilling platform, are correct and feasible, while improve the efficiency of the power unit and make a significant energy saving effect.Read More
