Title: Managing Different Work‐Life Balance Expectations
Abstract: Each generation introduces a new set of values into the workplace, and although work-life balance has been on the radar for previous generations, it is certainly of more importance to Millennials, with 48 percent of them choosing workplace flexibility over pay. Gen X managers are in a particularly precarious position, their work ethic was heavily influenced by their boomer and traditionalist predecessors, but they also have to navigate the new rules of the Millennial generation. The Millennials demanded even greater flexibility in how and where they do their jobs. As the Millennials move into more managerial roles, they are likely to rewrite the rules even more. The challenge with the word balance is that it implies equal distribution something that can be difficult to achieve in areas as time-consuming and complex as work and personal life. To determine whether employees are productive, managers are increasingly relying on key performance indicators (KPIs).
