Abstract: Dysphagia (eating and swallowing difficulties) is common among people with developmental disability, and is associated with significant health risks if not managed well. Dysphagia can result in malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia and choking.Difficulties with chewing and swallowing can vary in presentation and impact. Some people with dysphagia may need foods modified to reduce the risk of choking or drinks thickened to prevent fluid from entering the airway. Behaviours that can increase a person's risk for choking such as putting a lot of food in the mouth and eating very quickly can also be seen.
