Abstract: Slovak language has stress consistently on the first syllable. Therefore, the stress in Slovak is not a distinctive but delimitating function; that is, the initial stress is a strong signal of the word-beginning to which the perception of foreign languages by Slovak speakers is subordinated. However, the stress is inconsistently shifted to one-syllable prepositions thus causing a stress dilemma in Slovak orthoepy. This paper lists a number of criteria influencing the stress shit to the one-syllable prepositions. The most important criteria are number of syllables and sentence semantics. Others are rhythmic, euphonic, distinctive and stylistic criteria. This paper suggests two new criteria: syntagmatic and regional.
