Title: 97/01568 The effect of molten caustic leaching on a structure of anthracite
Abstract: Korean anthracite and imported bituminous coal were treated according to the molten caustic leaching (MCL) process and the changes in their organic structure and combustion characteristics sere investigated. This investigation was conducted through functional group analysis, vitrinite reflectance measurements, maceral and TGA analysis. Results of analysis showed that the highly reactive aliphatic hydrocarbons linked with aromatic rings decreased and the vitrinite reflectance increased after treatment. These are changes observed when carbonization occurred. However, the results of observation of maceral surfaces showed that the surface of the organic groups were severely collapsed and the anisotropy, which should increase with carbonization, decreased. It was found that the changes in the combustion temperature and the reactivity after treatment with MCL were attributed to the physical changes on the surface of organic groups rather than to the chemical changes such as break down in the organic groups.
