Title: Developing a National Program for Research on Underutilized Crops in India
Abstract: Climate and soil determine what crops are possible in particular regions, but economic considerations determine which are actually grown and how they are incorporated into cropping systems. The practicality of farming is to get the best out of those cropping systems in a sustainable way. There are two parts to this. The first is to develop the most appropriate general pattern of production. The second is to improve the performance of individual strategies by tactical variations that seek to maximize the benefits and minimize the disadvantages imposed by variability of external conditions, principally weather and economic conditions. Tactical management includes variations to crop sequences, cultivars, planting dates, planting densities, fertilizer rate, and times of application. It was made clear that the benefits of successful tactical management will only be achieved as the skills of farmers increase sufficient for the measurements of the status of their crops required as inputs to the assessment of management options.
