Title: From experienced teachers to newcomers to the profession: The capital conversion of internationally educated teachers in Canada
Abstract: Internationally educated teachers' (IETs) ability to recertify and find employment in a new country is an important concern for the successful diversification of the teaching profession internationally. In order to understand the challenges that IETs face, I build on Bourdieu's work and in particular on the concept of professional capital. Through an extended case study of a recertification program for IETs in Canada, I highlight the cultural specificity of the professional capital of teachers. The recertification process overlooks the diverse knowledge and perspectives that IETs have, and thus limits their potential to enrich and diversify the teaching profession.
