Title: The City as an Environment for Urban Experiences and the Learning of Cultural Practices
Abstract: This chapter deals with the city not only as a spatial phenomenon, but as a cultural expression, social construction, and an object of study for different disciplines, particularly environmental psychology. It looks at the psychological and social dimensions of the urban space and its importance for quality of life and coexistence. It is precisely these dimensions that give character to the urban environment and enable its appropriation, without which the space would lack meaning, and people would not have increased opportunities for communication, social meetings, protests, fun and learning to coexist. This literature review covers some of the main areas of research for environmental psychologists, including urban identity, gender and spatiality, urban cognition and appropriation, and some other areas of tension and debate specific to Latin American countries, such as democratic (protests) and cultural (street artists and graffiti) expressions, taking advantage of the economic utility or the appropriation of street vendors, but first noting the changes in the research in the field from a pessimistic to an optimistic vision of living in the city. Finally, there is the idea of responsible urban behavior to promote cultural practices that contribute to coexistence and that are sustainable over time.
