Title: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium - Needs and Balance for High Yields
Abstract: In order to save time and labor and to speed planting, many growers are going to heavier broadcast-plowdown applications of nitrogen (N)-phosphorus (P)-potassium (K) with smaller amounts or none at planting. High crop yields require large amounts of nutrients. The roots of more closely spaced plants intertwine and compete more for the nutrients in the soil. Much of the fertilizer use is in the hands of the breeders since higher yielding varieties will take more nutrients. The many factors influencing yield level and efficiency of use of NPK emphasize the dynamic nature of NPK requirements. With increasing fertilizer rates in attempts to obtain high yields, other growth factors are likely to be more limiting. While soil tests are of major importance at low fertility, at high fertility and high yield levels other factors and other tools may assume greater importance. Improved management practices can do much to increase the yield from each inch of water.
