Title: Precisazioni sulla decorazione dell’organo cinquecentesco di Santa Maria del Giglio a Venezia: una proposta di ricostruzione
Abstract: Precisazioni sulla decorazione dell’organo cinquecentesco di Santa Maria del Giglio Santa Maria del Giglio (o Santa Maria Zobenigo, dal nome di una delle famiglie fondatrici) e una delle chiese matrici di Venezia e, dunque, tra le piu antiche: ricostruita una prima volta nel 966 a causa di un incendio, fu nuovamente rifatta nel 1105. A questa fase risale probabilmente la piccola basilica a tre navate raffigurata nella veduta di Jacopo de’ Barbari del 1500, il cui assetto interno e rappresentato in modo piuttosto dettagliato in una pianta conservata presso l’Archivio Patriarcale (fig. 1). Tale documento, pubblicato alcuni anni fa da Silvia Moretti, e purtroppo sfuggito alla mia attenzione durante la stesura di un recente contributo dedicato all’organo rinascimentale della chiesa, scomparso in seguito alla ricostruzione dell’edificio avvenuta tra il 1680 e il 1683. Di esso si conservarono soltanto le pitture, riutilizzate come decorazione parietale nella nuova parrocchiale: i Quattro Evangelisti di Jacopo Tintoretto, collocati nel coro capitolare dietro all’altare maggiore (figg. 2-3), la Conversione di San Paolo dello stesso pittore, esposta sulla parete di controfacciata (da cui scomparve pero nel corso dell’Ottocento), e le quattro Sibille di Giuseppe Porta, tuttora collocate ai fianchi del portale maggiore (fig. 5). Secondo la guida di Francesco Sansovino del 1581, l’edificio era stato da poco restaurato (“ne tempi presenti”) per interessamento dei procuratori della parrocchia, i fratelli Giustiniano e Giulio Contarini. Sebbene non sia nota l’entita di quell’intervento, si potrebbe pensare a puntuali opere di riparazione e consolidamento statico, accompagnate dal rinnovamento dell’ornamentazione interna. Lo stesso autore ribadisce infatti l’antichita della fabbrica (“ancora che per sito sia antica”), menzionando successivamente una serie di nuovi dipinti, come l’Annunciazione di Giuseppe Porta per l’altare maggiore e le portelle d’organo tintorettesche. Il contratto per la realizzazione di quest’ultime, in particolare, fu sottoscritto proprio da Giulio Contarini nel 1552, come dimostra la documentazione pubblicata da Lorenzetti, nella quale si accenna anche alla cassa dell’organo e alla balconata che la sorreggeva. Lo strumento vero e proprio era stato commissionato pochi anni prima: i tre progetti proposti da Vincenzo Colombi risalgono infatti al 1547 e prevedevano la consegna del manufatto entro la Pasqua dell’anno seguente.
