Title: Comparison of different microreactors for solvent-free, continuous synthesis of [EMIM][EtSO4] ionic liquid: An experimental and CFD study
Abstract: High-temperature, solvent-free continuous synthesis of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulphate ([EMIM][EtSO4]) in three different microreactors (T-junction microreactor, t-junction serpentine microreactor and split-and-recombine microreactor) is studied. Comparison of the microreactors has been done on the basis of the conversion, space-time-yield and production rate attained for the same residence time and Reynolds number. The effects of residence time and reaction temperature on conversion are studied using the split-and-recombine microreactor. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations have been carried out to model the momentum, heat and species transport in the microreactors. The results from CFD simulations have been used to substantiate the experimental observations. Both experiments and CFD simulations show that, within the range of variables explored in this study, the performance of the serpentine microreactor is better than other two microreactors.
