One of the most obvious reason companies fail at business model innovation is because CEOs and their senior leadership teams do not want to explore new business models. They are so consumed pedaling the bicycle of their current business models they have no time, attention, or resources to design, prototype, and test new ones. The clearest indication that an organization and its leaders are not interested in business model innovation is when any discussion about emerging business models in the market or about potentially disruptive technology is viewed and treated solely as a competitive threat. Today's CEOs have never had to change their business models. Leaders focus almost exclusively on improving their current business models at the expense of exploring new ones. Therefore, it should be no surprise that CEOs are not in a hurry to establish a company capability for business model innovation.
