Abstract: Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 on the remnants of the Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and his colleagues successfully led a two-fold war against the Allied occupation on the one hand and the Ottoman Sultanate on the other. The Turkish National Assembly started to function as an alternative authority to the Ottoman Empire in 1920. After the proclamation of the Republic, Ataturk became the first president of the new state.
