Title: Joseph Jones, MD, a Pioneer in Paleopathological Differential Diagnosis
Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents a biographical sketch of Joseph Jones. This is followed by a discussion of his contributions to medicine, bioarchaeology, and paleopathology. Jones' greatest contribution to paleopathology is his authoritative diagnosis of syphilis in prehistoric Native American remains from the Nashville Basin, the earliest published identification of that disease made by an experienced physician.
