Abstract: This chapter focuses on different aspects of national systems of teacher training. A number of case studies have concentrated on teacher training within the overall national educational system. These studies have described the wider educational reforms in their countries and the significance of lifelong education in these reforms. Incentives may be either a cause or an effect of the introduction of a system of lifelong education. The long-term practical and economic effects of consistently promoting teachers are bound to be influential. Resources are needed to support the activities enhancing teacher education and rewards given to those who better themselves. The logic of the situation and the limitations of economics ensure that both rewards and resources will be restricted. Perhaps the definition of lifelong education will have to be extended to include intrinsic satisfaction.
