Abstract: Many systems of regional integration exist in the world, but none is as broad and deep in nature as that of the European Union (EU). In the 50 years since the Treaty of Rome was signed, the EU has evolved to become the world's newest superpower and largest trading power. The EU defines itself as "a unique economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries" that aims to achieve "peace, prosperity and freedom for its 495 million citizens—in a fairer, safer world" (http://europa.eu/abc/panorama/index_en.htm). Indeed, the process of ever-closer integration among European nation-states is one of the most distinctive features of contemporary Europe and represents one of the most important political, economic, and social movements of our time. Participation in the EU has led to a new "European dimension" of politics and policies that infuses Europe's nations and societies.KeywordsEuropean UnionMember StateEuropean Union Member StateCultural PolicyEuropean Union LevelThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
