Abstract: There have been numerous subsequent amendments to the original IEEE 802.11 standard, most notably the IEEE 802.11A, IEEE 802.11B, IEEE 802.11G, IEEE 802.11I, and IEEE 802.11N technology standards, with many other already completed and ongoing 802.11 technologies expected (802.11E, 802.11S, 802.11R, and many more). Concurrent to initial IEEE 802.11 standardization efforts, ETSI published several wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies such as HIPERLAN and HIPERLAN/2. Moreover, there have been separate WLAN technology development efforts within China, resulting in the WAPI WLAN technology standard. This chapter provides an overview of the various IEEE 802.11 technologies that have been developed in largely chronological order of publication, with particular emphasis on those that have experienced significant deployment. It gives an overview of the various security architectures and mechanisms that have been standardized and deployed for 802.11 WLANs. Controlled Vocabulary Terms IEEE 802.11 Standards
