Abstract: EPR spectra and spectrally resolved relaxation rates or hyperfine couplings can be measured in pulse EPR experiments. The EPR frequencies and selection rules seen in continuous wave-EPR (CW-EPR) spectra also govern pulse EPR-experiments, but pulsed excitation provides much greater control of spin dynamics and allows clean separation and measurement of many properties of the spin system. The response of a simple, isotropic paramagnetic center is examined, and the frequency content and amplitudes of pulse EPR signals and Fourier-transform EPR (FT-EPR) spectra are described. Common, but more complicated, spin systems are discussed: centers with anisotropically coupled nuclear spins resulting in ESEEM (electron-spin echo envelope modulation); centers with substantial g -anisotropy; and centers with S = 1 and biradicals. Several approaches for obtaining 1-D and 2-D FT-EPR spectra are demonstrated with paramagnetic centers in crystalline and noncrystalline solids.
