Title: M. Hiriyanna, “The Problem of Truth” (1930)
Abstract: This chapter presents Mysore Hiriyanna's 1930 essay, “The Problem of Truth,” in which he tackles the nature of absolute truth in relation to the logical aspect of knowledge. Hiriyanna is best known as a historian of Indian philosophy. His text Outlines of Indian Philosophy (1932) remains a standard text worldwide. He also made important contributions to Vedānta studies and to ethics and aesthetics. Hiriyanna taught for many years at Mysore University. In his essay, Hiriyanna regards absolute truth as the principal human cognitive aim but approaches it through an analysis of empirical truth and the relation of the empirical to the absolute. He also considers the nature of sense-data, their relation to the object, and the manner in which both the sense-data and the object come to be known. He argues that objects and relations, but never sense, may be erroneously presented.
