Title: Sesquiterpene Lactones and Allelochemicals from Centaurea Species
Abstract: The allelopathic weeds, Russian knapweed (Centaurea repens) and yellow starthistle (C. solstitialis), have been examined and found to contain several sesquiterpene lactones and two chromenes. A detailed analysis of the 13C-NMR spectra of the sesquiterpenes has been carried out, thus permitting structural analysis using 13C-NMR alone. The sesquiterpene lactones acroptilin, repin, solstitiolide, and centaurepensin caused increased root elongation at 10ppm and inhibited it at higher concentrations. The chromenes had no significant biological activity.
