Title: Documenting Demonization in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Abstract: Based on a collection of illustrative examples, the chapter documents instances of demonization between Israeli and Palestinian elites using the probing question: "Who demonized whom, when and how?" Normand provides a prima facie sense of the demonizing narratives in the conflict and places them into the context of Israeli and Palestinian ideologies and historical experiences. The chapter also show how each side's demonizing discourse appears in different contexts of perceived evils: while Palestinian demonization of Israelis must be understood in the context of their own colonial experiences, Israeli demonization of Palestinians must be understood in the context of their own experiences of security concerns and terrorism. The same speech act was therefore used to express different evil experiences of the same conflict.
