This chapter describes existing carbon-capture technologies, application schemes, and possible future improvements and modifications. Many existing techniques for CO2 capture from industrial and electricity generation plants are suggested, and some aim to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere. At present, the most commonly used CO2-capture technique is the use of chemical solvents such as methylaminoethanol (MAE) and many proprietary products. These processes have higher operating and capital costs, environmental risks, and technical restraints. To address these problems, several other techniques such as physical solvents/sorbents, molecular sieves, activated carbon, membranes, cryogenic fractionation, chemical-looping combustion, and combination processes are under investigation.
