Title: French Calvinists As the Children of Israel: An Old Testament Self-Consciousness in Jean Crespin's Histoire des Martyrs before the Wars of Religion
Abstract: This study probes the ways in which French martyrs from Jean Crespin's Histoire des Martyrs appropriated the Old Testament before the onset of the Religious Wars in order to describe themselves and their world. Specifically, the case is made that martyrs in Crespin's martyrology manifested a singularly Old Testament self-perception not found in the martyrologies of other lands where Reformed Protestantism became an influential force, namely in Adriaan van Haemstede's De gheschiedenisse ende de doodt der vromer Martelaren and John Foxe's Actes and Monuments. This investigation will conclude by suggesting factors that may have accounted for these differences.
