Title: International Crop Genetic Resource Networks
Abstract: A crop genetic resource networking program was implemented during 1989 involving international seed base collections and national genetic resource programs to enhance exploitation of genetic variability, to coordinate collection and conservation activities, and to strengthen collaboration and research on global crop resources. Under the mandate of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the catalyzing guidance of the International Plant Genetic Resource Institute (IPGRI), international and regional data bases were developed as a focal point for collaborative networking activities. Twenty European data bases are currently functioning under the leadership of steering or coordinating committees. Seven European Crop Working Groups [Avena, Barley (Hordeum), Grass and Legume Forages, Prunus, Sunflower (Helianthus), Allium, and Brassica] are operational. Eight groups [Beta, Musa, Barley, Coconut (Cocos), Rice (Oryza), Cassava (Manihot), Okra (Abelmoschus), and Sweet Potato (Ipomoea)] have expanded and are globally functional. The scientific and political collaborative framework of the networking program is a true partnership that uses the crop gene pool as the principal building block for shared mutually beneficial genetic resource activities.
