Abstract: Foreigners have difficulties in understanding, or gleaning the humour from Chinese manhua because the meanings of the works are rooted in history, culture and the society. The older generations of Chinese cartoonists have been closed off from the outside world of cartooning, and developed a unique style that served political and societal goals. This chapter offers a profile of the careers of master cartoonists Feng Zikai, Zhang Leping, Liao Bingxiong, Hua Junwu and Fang Cheng with a glimpse of their humorous styles, illustrations and interview quotations.
