Abstract: Socrates (470–399 BC), a seminal figure in Western philosophy, left behind no written record of his thoughts. He was presented by his student, Plato (c. 427–347 BC), as the main speaker in a series of dialogues, as well as by Xenophon, and by at least nine other of his associates whose Socratic conversations are referred to in various sources, but most of which are now lost.
