Title: Setting the table for mountain tourism: the case of a South African National Park.
Abstract: This chapter examines Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) as a mountain tourism destination. This case builds the historical progression of this mountain icon, from when it first developed as a tourist destination in the early 1900s to the present day. It further elaborates on mountains as prominent assets for tourism visitation and how they impact on surrounding communities. Also presented is a profile of visitors to TMNP, locally, regionally and internationally. The chapter discusses the diversity of park visitor travel motivations and the historic and current importance of the attraction in distinguishing the Cape region of South Africa.
