Title: The Conversational Functions of Angloromani
Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides an analysis of Angloromani's conversational functions and ongoing efforts. The claim here is that Angloromani serves as a kind of formalisation or conventionalisation of a mode of communication that calls on the hearer in a rather explicit way to activate a specialised presuppositional domain when processing an utterance. The chapter reveals how Angloromani is used at the level of the individual speech act. Angloromani is a major tool in delivering the humorous key of the story. The historical process leading from Romani to Angloromani is a kind of ‘grammaticalisation of a language’. The church's leadership realised the opportunity to expand into Romani communities in central and eastern Europe. The process of revitalisation of Romani in Britain is the sum of the individual learning processes. The church has played a role in inspiring intellectual learning in the form of Bible reading sessions and study sessions.
