Title: Social and Emotional Learning for Successful School Performance
Abstract: This chapter focuses specifically on school-based programming that promotes the social and emotional learning (SEL) of children and youth. SEL represents a rapidly growing movement in preschool through high school education. Although emotional intelligence and SEL have much in common, they also differ in certain respects. Most notably, SEL builds from the field of social-competence-promotion research and emphasizes educational strategies to enhance children's capacities to coordinate emotion, cognition, and behaviour to deal effectively with daily challenges and achieve positive developmental outcomes. The chapter begins by defining SEL and describing applications of SEL principles in elementary and secondary schools. Next, it highlights some components of effective programming and benefits of SEL, and then identifies some current theoretical, empirical, and conceptual issues that will help advance the field. Finally, the chapter addresses key questions posed by the editors to all volume contributors.
