Abstract: Henry Festing Jones's Memoir gives sufficient evidence that Butler's private rhetoric was much the same as his public. All through Jones's two massive volumes we find Butler doing in his private life what he was doing in his public as regards chiasmus. Often the chiastic passages quoted in Jones's Memoir are even more revealing than corresponding ones in Butler's own published works, because we are allowed to see more of the feelings they gave rise to — feelings such as satisfaction, triumph and anxiety.
