Abstract: The post-war history of the Occupation in France has been marked by intense and often violent contradictions between different political, cultural and generational group memories of les années noires. Henry Rousso is not the only commentator and historian to have been struck by the changing nature of both public and private memories of the war years and the insistence with which certain groups return time and again to the war years to legitimize their political and ideological goals. Indeed, it is possible to construct an overview of post-war historical and literary narratives of the war years which focuses on such conflictual group memories and sees them as a defining structure when analysing the heritage of the Occupation.
