The lives, contributions, and legacies of Lucy Webb Hayes, Lucretia Rudolph Garfield, and Mary Arthur McElroy are more than just historical footnotes, however, and deserve serious study and interpretation. These women—two married to presidents and one a presidential sister—played important roles in an era in which women were often relegated only to the domestic sphere. Lucy Hayes and Lucretia Garfield were the first two college-educated first ladies in the United States; each survived personal tragedies, including deaths of children and, in one case, a presidential assassination—the second one in US history. The third, Mary Arthur McElroy, was well known for the popularity of her White House parties. This chapter provides biographies of First Ladies Hayes, Garfield, and McElroy and examines the unique and difficult circumstances in which each served as first lady.
