Abstract: Up until now, we have followed both the male and female participants on their journey to seek support. However, after their decision to access counselling, their paths separate and in this chapter we look specifically at the experiences of the female participants. To recap: we have seen the participants identify their need for help and have seen them progress through a referral system and into the domestic violence agency. For the women specifically, this apparent deference to the referrer in agreeing to come to counselling may previously have been identified in the literature as a lack of self-confidence in making decisions or a sign of helplessness brought on by the experience of DV (Walker, 1977). In this present study, however, it appeared to be a considered decision based on their assessment of the referring individuals concerned, using a process that was perhaps designed to protect themselves from more disappointment.
