The difference between a medallist and a participating athlete is often a fraction of a second. In order to maintain and maximise the marginal gain in performance, it is crucial to understand precisely how an athlete performs. Thus far, most of the quantitative analysis of athletic performance is only carried out in highly constrained laboratory environment, and thus the information captured may not reflect the natural competing environment. The ESPRIT (Elite Sport Performance Research in Training) programme aims to develop pervasive sensing technologies to enable real-time, continuous and quantitative measurement of athletic performance during normal training and competition settings. It is designed not only to help secure a competitive advantage for UK athletes, but also to increase our understanding of the biology of athletic performance, thus leading to improvements in the health and wellbeing of the population at large.Read More
