Title: 1970, Planet Earth: The Imagination of the Global
Abstract: This chapter shows how viewing the globe as a unitary system can affect literature, starting with a section on the image of the ‘Blue Planet’. The next section studies the tension between the awareness of the planetary whole and the sharpened perception of differences, which mark the imagination of the global in culture and literature. The chapter emphasises the mark left on literature by the dangers of atomic war and addresses the question of who holds power in the global order and how it is used, ending with a section on the increase of the number of literary translations all over the world.
