Title: Care in normal labour: a feminist perspective
Abstract: Childbirth is, in the Western world, no longer perceived as a normal, physiological process, even in women who are fit and healthy and have had an uncomplicated pregnancy. This is because, since the 1960s, childbirth has been 'managed' by obstetricians who consider that childbirth, in all women, can be considered normal only in retrospect (Savage 1986; Wertz & Wertz 1989). This has resulted in a steady rise in the use of fetal monitoring, induction, Syntocinon, epidural analgesia, episiotomy, forceps and caesarean section: childbirth is now 'medicalised'.
