Abstract: Abstract Physical activity improves mental as well as physical health. It has direct and indirect effects on symptoms of both affective and cognitive disorders. Improving engagement in physical activity is an important aspect of the management of the poor physical health that is associated with a range of mental health problems. Social isolation occurs alongside poor mental health; sports and exercise participation are a helpful means by which this can be addressed. Participation is important for recovery and in building an independent, hopeful, and fulfilling life away from a sick role in any chronic condition, but may be especially useful in severe mental illnesses such as psychoses.
