The reaction is carried out in vitro in a flow reactor with no overflow and shows bistabilty, simple and complex oscillations, and chaos. It is the best understood example of an enzyme-catalyzed system showing behaviors associated with nonlinear dynamic laws. Its experimental behavior is described here, as well as the results from a number of examples of reaction mechanisms of varying complexity that reproduce much of its experimentally observed behavior.
